Most are real, it is ultimately a matter of trust that the product seller will pay their affiliates, most do pay their affiliates, using automated tracking systems that exactly calculate the affiliate fees due. There's probably some shaving of payouts, and I hear of ocassions where affiliates getting cut out by phone order or certain return-refund-reorder events. This affiliate thing has gotten quite competitive, people who put in a big effort without getting any sales probably start wondering if it's fixed. A couple of areas more deserving a degree of paranoia are ppc advertising click fraud robbing affiliates of their money (see the pay to click discussions in these pages) and Google's designs to eliminate affiliate marketers, who they view as unnecessary street hustlers. |
